If one does not understand this key point and simply proclaims that the preceding argument is a refutation of Mahamudra, this is a fault of not having investigated the subtle distinctions of the path of calm abiding. It is taught that the point of the yoga of calm abiding is to improve over and over again until finally reaching the nine states of meditative absorption. But here, because the advancement to simplicity only comes from this particular type of one-pointedness, one does not rely on attaining the nine absorptions. How could this not be so? As Lopön Pawo said:
Beings who go astray from your [the Buddha’s] teachings, blinded by ignorance, may have reached the summit of worldly existence,23 but suffering will arise again and existence will persist. Followers of your teachings, even if they do not attain the main body of meditative concentration, will be untouched by maras, and samsara will be purified and averted, left behind like a pile of grass.
